Pyongyang Peasant Dance is a local folk dance handed down in Pyongyang for a long time.
Pyongyang, the cradle of our national culture, has had many fields, fertile land and it has been rich in water resources since olden times as it is surrounded by the Taedong River. The temperature has been neither cold nor hot, and it has had a lot of rainfall, which has been conducive to farming.
Thanks to these good natural and geographical conditions, agricultural labor started in Pyongyang from early years and the culture has developed.
Like in the other regions, the peasants in Pyongyang regularly played drums and stigmas in the farming season and gave priority to the chorus leading people in order to achieve a great success in farming. In autumn they celebrated the rich harvest splendidly.
In modern times the role of the peasant band has increased in such a rich harvest game, and in this process the function of the peasant dance has been further enhanced.
From early morning, the peasants beat drums in the village entrance, blowing horns to gather villagers, and let the farmers musical instrument players precede the others to the paddy fields.
The peasants lessened their fatigue by dancing peasant dances during a break and they came back home playing farm music and dancing after work.
During the farming season, the peasants in Pyongyang played peasant music and danced to gain better results of their farming. At the time of the autumn harvest, when they had finished their farming, the whole villages turned out to play peasant dances, giving full play to the joy of rich harvest.
